The recommended oil for an air-cooled VW is SAE30. Preferably with a detergent additive. No multi-viscosity, no synthetics.
If you run your Bug in sub-freezing temps, you could very well run a 5w30 without causing problems.
However.....In hotter weather (over 80 F), I've been known to run SAE40 or 15w40 in my more built-up Type 4 engines, but the -4 has larger oil passages. What kind of motor oil is best for a 1970 VW bug?
I did well with 10w40 in all my Bugs unless it was a performance-built engine- then I used 10W50.
And always added a can of STP for good measure. What kind of motor oil is best for a 1970 VW bug?
When I had a 1970 VW Beetle, I always used 15W40, as recommended. 10W50 also works well.
In summer months use 10w40 In winter months cold areas use 10w30.
