Most of the modifications are to the fuel system, not the motor.
The high viscosity of stright vegetable oil SVO will wreck some injection pumps. Those fitted to 20+ year old Mercedes-Benz Diesel cars are said to stand the extra strain, particularly if the oil is heated first.
SVO will wreck direct injection Diesels since they accumulate carbon around the piston rings. This takes 700 or more hours of operation so it looks alright at first, but tests on a variety of motors has shown that it always happens.
Indirect injection Diesels appear to last indefinitely on SVO. Again, 20+ year old Mercedes Diesels have indirect injection. You may need new injectors as well.
If your Diesel has a common rail injection system it cannot work on SVO.
You will probably have to start a cold engine on petroleum Diesel fuel unless you live in a warm climate. Even that is no guarantee. This means two fuel systems.
If you live in a cold climate a fuel tank and fuel line heater will be needed. This is advisable anyway to get the oil through fuel filters.
This is not all you will need but it's a start. Look around the net for a lot more information. I understand that a kit for converting M-B diesel cars is or was available.
Running fuel mixtures is possible without much conversion. How do I modify my diesel motor to run on vegetable oil?
You don't have to modify it. You just need to make sure that the oil is clean and free from cooking crud, which would do nasty things to the fuel injectors. You could add an extra fuel filter, just to be safe. How do I modify my diesel motor to run on vegetable oil?
You need to have a two tank truck. One tank diesel, the other oil. Your engine must be hot for the oil to work, so run a mile or so with diesel, then flip the switch to oil and it will run fine.
i wouldnt recomend going to vegetable oil because yes it does work but they havent done enough testing on it to know the long term effect it has on your engine or any other components of your vehicle
